Smoked paprika salt
Messolonghi Salt with Smoked Paprika
Salt with Smoked Paprika combines the familiar salty base of Greek Messolonghi salt with the deep aroma and distinctive color of smoked paprika. It’s a ready-to-use seasoning for anyone looking to add saltiness and a smoky character in one easy step. It’s especially good with grilled foods, roasted meats, potatoes, and vegetables, but can also be used in many other everyday recipes.
The Salt We Use
The base of this product is Messolonghi salt, from a region with a long tradition of salt production in Greece. Smoked paprika is added to create a blend with a vibrant color and a distinct smoky character. This practical combination lets you season food without having to measure out salt and paprika separately each time.
Origin and Identity
Messolonghi is closely associated with Greece’s salt pans and sea salt production. Seawater collects in shallow basins, where the sun and wind increase the brine’s concentration until crystals form. Smoked paprika adds the product’s other key element: its characteristic smoky aroma and the sweet, full-bodied flavor of red peppers.
Aroma, Color, and Flavor
The blend has a warm reddish to terracotta appearance, with natural variations depending on the ratio of salt to paprika in each part of the blend. The smoky character of the paprika dominates on the nose, while the saltiness comes through first on the palate, followed by the spice’s sweet, smoky profile. You don’t need much: it’s best to add it gradually to control the final intensity.
How to Use It
It’s exceptionally convenient for grilled meats, steaks, chicken, pork, burgers, and BBQ. Use it before cooking as part of a simple dry rub or add it at the end as a seasoning. It also works beautifully on roasted or fried potatoes, grilled corn, mushrooms, zucchini, and other vegetables. In tomato sauces, legumes, and stews, it adds saltiness and smoky depth without the need for lots of different seasonings.
Pairings
It pairs especially well with black pepper, garlic, onion, oregano, thyme, and cumin. For BBQ, mix it with a small amount of brown sugar and additional spices to create a simple rub. In dishes with eggs, grilled cheeses, or legumes, it easily adds a smokier dimension. Natural Appearance
Since this is a blend of two different ingredients, slight variations in color and paprika distribution are normal. During storage, finer particles may also shift slightly within the package. A light stir before use helps distribute the blend more evenly.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry, dark place, away from moisture, steam, and direct sunlight. Keep the package tightly closed, as both salt and paprika are affected by moisture. Always use a dry spoon and avoid storing it directly above or next to a cooking surface.
Precautions
This product contains salt and is therefore a source of sodium. Moderate use as part of a balanced diet is recommended. People following a sodium-restricted diet or who have received specific dietary instructions should follow the recommendations of their doctor or healthcare professional.
