Malawi Chili Peppers (Birds Eye)
The Malawi Birds Eye is one of the hottest chili peppers in the world, usually exceeding 100,000 to 175,000 Scoville Heat Units. Although its size is small — typically 3-5 centimeters (one inch) — its spicy power is undeniable. It is used daily in African cuisine and is a favorite ingredient for those who love authentic hot flavor.
The ingredient we use
We use whole dried Birds Eye peppers from Malawi in their natural form — raw, without additives or preservatives. They are used whole or ground immediately before use. Their color is deep red to brown with a slightly wrinkled surface.
Botanical identity
It comes from the plant Capsicum frutescens, Solanaceae family. Malawi Birds Eye is mainly cultivated in Malawi, Southern Africa, and other sub-Saharan African countries. It is closely related to the Thai bird's eye chili but has a different aromatic character from the same species in Asia. It grows in tropical conditions, which positively affects its flavor complexity.
Aroma, color, and taste
Intense and fruity aroma with slight earthy notes. The heat appears quickly and lingers intensely in the throat. Compared to common habanero or serrano, Birds Eye has a cleaner pungency without many additional aromas — this makes it versatile in many recipes. Deep red to brown color with a wrinkled surface.
How it is used
A basic ingredient in African hot sauces and curries. Excellent in jerk-style flavors for meats, in marinades, and in soups. It is also used as a hot base in Greek recipes that require intense heat without other aromas that would dominate the dish. Combinations
It pairs perfectly with flavors that can withstand its heat, such as chicken, pork, and fish. It enhances African sauces and Indian curries with their hot base without overpowering the aromas of other ingredients.
Natural appearance
Small, thin peppers, deep red to brown in color. Their surface is slightly wrinkled due to drying. Their size is usually 3-5 centimeters, quite small.
Storage
In a sealed container, away from light, moisture, and heat. Keeps for up to 2 years.
Precautions
It belongs to the Solanaceae family. Suitable only for those who can tolerate hot flavors and know their limits. Pregnant women should avoid it completely. If taking anticoagulants, consult a doctor.
