Peruvian pink salt is mountain spring salt from the terraced Maras salt pans in the Peruvian Andes, near Machu Picchu at an altitude of 3,000 meters. An underground spring of hot, mineral-rich brine flows into 4,200+ terraced pools, where it is evaporated exclusively by solar energy using traditional Inca methods. These salt pans have been in continuous use for over 2,000 years and are owned by 380+ families who inherit them from generation to generation.

The salt we use

We use natural granules of 1-2 mm from solar evaporation, unrefined and without additives. The crystals form within weeks in the shallow pools, are hand-harvested and gently dried with exclusively mechanical processing — without chemicals. This preserves the natural mineral composition of the mountain brine absolutely unchanged.

Historical Identity

The Maras salt pans are located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Valle Sagrado), near Cusco. The spring does not come from the sea but from an ancient marine layer trapped in the Andes, rich in trace elements. Unlike classic sea salt, this comes from a mountain spring at an altitude of 3,000 meters — a unique geological feature. Each pool belongs to a family and is harvested exclusively by hand.

Aroma, color and taste

The granules are white to slightly off-white with a noticeably slightly moist texture. The light pink color that appears in some granules comes from the trace elements in the water, not from dyes. The taste is mild, rounded and harmonious — without harsh salty edges or a metallic aftertaste. It subtly enhances the aromas of ingredients without overpowering them.

How to use

Due to its 1-2 mm grain, it is ideal for a salt mill, rubs and spice blends. It is also used as an everyday cooking salt for daily cuisine and gourmet dishes. Particularly suitable for fish, vegetables, poultry and light sauces. Add a pinch to the rim of a Margarita or Bloody Mary for excellent presentation. Combinations

With fish and seafood, it brings out the delicate flavor without overpowering it. With poultry and vegetables for risottos, stews and light sauces. With herbs and aromatics in rubs for grilled meats. With olive oil and garlic as an everyday cooking salt. With Margarita or Bloody Mary on the rim of the glass for unique presentation.

Natural appearance

White to slightly off-white granules 1-2 mm with a slightly moist texture — from up close it looks like coarse sea salt but in a milder and more harmonious version. The color varies slightly per batch due to the natural composition of each pool.

Storage

Store in a cool and dark place, in an airtight container away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Precautions

Contains no known allergens. Like all salts, excessive sodium intake affects blood pressure. Use in moderation.
