Fine Himalayan Black Salt (Kala Namak)
Kala Namak, or Himalayan black salt, is one of the most unique salts in the world — recognizable by its strong sulfuric egg smell that gives it its flavor. Although called black, in its fine form its color is pinkish-grey due to its high sulfur content and trace gases.
The salt we use
We use Kala Namak in fine form — fine-grained like table salt. Unprocessed, without artificial treatment or additives. Pinkish-grey color with slight violet hues.
Geographical and historical identity
Kala Namak is an unrefined salt mined from deposits in the Himalayan region, mainly in Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Its flavor is due to the high content of hydrogen sulfide and trace gases such as sulfides and sodium chloride. Its use in Indian cuisine and vegetarian gastronomy dates back at least 2,000 years.
Aroma, color, and taste
The aromatic profile of Kala Namak is unique: an intense sulfuric egg smell that disappears with cooking — this is its characteristic feature. Its taste is salty with slightly less pungency than common salt, with a clear perceptible flavor texture reminiscent of egg yolk. Pinkish-grey color in its fine form.
How it is used
A basic ingredient in Indian cuisine and chaat masala. It is the secret ingredient in vegetarian and vegan cooking because it gives dishes an egg-like flavor texture without containing any egg. It is used as a finishing salt directly on the dish for an intensified aroma. Do not cook it — the sulfuric egg aroma disappears with high temperatures. Combinations
It pairs excellently with Indian spices such as cumin, coriander, and ginger. In vegan cooking, it is used in tofu scrambles, chickpea eggs, and potato creams. Also excellent in raita, fruit salads, and chutneys where its aromatic profile is fully enhanced.
Natural appearance
Fine powder, uniform, pinkish-grey color with slight violet hues. Dissolves easily and immediately releases its smell.
Storage
In an airtight container, in a cool and dark place, away from moisture. Keeps for up to 3 years.
Precautions
It contains high levels of sodium and is not recommended for people with hypertension or heart problems without medical advice. Use in moderation as a flavor enhancer and not as a daily salt in large quantities.
