Pickles – Sowthistle
Ficaria – Zohadochorto is a dried herbal raw material associated with the species Ficaria verna, known internationally as lesser celandine. It is a low-growing spring plant in the Ranunculaceae family, with glossy yellow flowers and fleshy leaves. Its name and traditional presence should not lead to arbitrary consumption: the fresh plant in particular contains irritating compounds, and a clear distinction must be made between historical references and safe modern use.
Ficaria verna – botanical identity
Ficaria appears early in spring in damp, shady places. It belongs to the same broader family as several plants that contain active and irritating substances. The dried product looks different from the fresh plant, so identification based only on a photograph or common name is not sufficient when deciding how to use it.
Why caution is needed
The fresh plant material may contain compounds associated with protoanemonin that cause irritation. Processing and drying change the raw material’s profile, but this is no reason to assume that every dried batch is automatically suitable for unrestricted internal use. We do not recommend improvised infusions or dosages without verification of the batch.
Traditional references without therapeutic claims
The plant appears in older European herbal sources, but historical references do not amount to modern evidence of efficacy or safety. For this reason, we do not attribute therapeutic properties to ficaria and do not recommend it for treating any specific condition.
Different plants, different profiles
Common Greek names may vary from region to region. If you are looking for another traditional dried herb, you can see Lungwort – Pulmonaria, which is an entirely different botanical material. We do not substitute one plant for another just because their folk names or traditional references are similar.
A little Spices Bazaar secret
With lesser-known herbs, the best practice is to keep the product, its commercial name, and its botanical identity together. An unlabelled jar of dried leaves can quickly become impossible to identify safely.
Storage and precautions
Store dry, tightly sealed, and away from light. Unsupervised internal use or use of the fresh plant is not recommended due to its irritating constituents. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, in cases of chronic illness, or when taking medication, professional guidance is required before any regular use.
