Onion powder is one of the most convenient and practical ingredients in everyday cooking. It is derived from the drying and grinding of selected high-quality onions and provides a sweet, caramelized onion flavor without the hassle and tears. It mixes instantly into sauces, stocks, and pasta without the need for preparation, and is ideal for recipes that require a uniform onion flavor without visible chunks or pieces. Compared to flakes or granules, the powder blends more evenly into food, leaving a smooth onion flavor in every bite.

The ingredient we use

We use high-quality dried onion, ground into a fine, glossy powder, raw, with no additives or colorings. The color is light yellow, characteristic of dried onion powder. The powder is fine and glossy with good flow—it dissolves easily in liquids and sauces, and blends perfectly with other spices without leaving lumps.

Botanical identity

The onion (Allium cepa, fam. Amaryllidaceae) has been cultivated all over the world for over 5,000 years. The ancient Egyptians used it as a medicine, while the pyramid builders were fed onions, garlic, and radishes. The process of drying and grinding removes the pungency of fresh onion and brings out the sweet and caramelized side of its flavor.

Aroma, color, and taste

Light yellow color with a fine, glossy texture. The aroma is sweet and caramelized—completely different from fresh onion, whose pungency and acidity have disappeared. The taste is sweet, slightly caramelized with an umami depth that enhances every recipe. It dissolves easily in liquids, leaving a vibrant onion flavor in soups and stews, even if added right at the end of cooking.

How to use it

Mix directly into pasta sauces and burgers for an intense onion profile without the onion being visible. Add to soups and stocks directly for a vibrant onion base without the effort. Excellent in dips and spreads such as hummus and taramasalata for a smooth onion flavor. Use the powder as a base for spice rubs for meat that never loses its flavor. See also Onion Flakes for the lightly chopped version with visible texture.

Combinations

With garlic and thyme for a classic Greek cuisine base with a deep aromatic profile. With black pepper and paprika for barbecue sauce. With cumin and turmeric for Indian-style curry blends. With rosemary and bay leaves for an aromatic stock base. With yogurt and lemon for a sauce for fish and chicken.

Physical appearance

Fine, glossy powder of a light yellow color with good flow—it is immediately distinguished from flakes and granules due to its finer grind and more uniform dispersion.

Storage

Store in a cool and dark place, in an airtight container away from moisture. Due to its fine texture, moisture absorption is particularly important. Keeps for up to 2 years.

Precautions

Contains no known allergens related to fresh onion. Individuals with sensitivity to the Amaryllidaceae family (garlic, leeks) should use with caution.
