Dried Chamomile – Edible Flowers (Matricaria chamomilla) is one of the most recognizable aromatic flowers in European and Mediterranean tradition. The small flower heads, with yellowish centers and pale petals, retain their characteristic sweet, herbal and slightly honeyed aroma after drying. At Spices Bazaar, it is available as an edible botanical ingredient, suitable for both classic infusions and select culinary applications.

Matricaria chamomilla – a classic European flower

German or common chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae family. The dried form is light and fragile, so it is normal to find whole flower heads together with smaller petals and some natural breakage in the package. The color may also vary from batch to batch depending on the harvest and drying process.

Aroma, flavor and preparation

For a simple infusion, steep the flowers in hot water for a few minutes, then strain. Adjust the strength by changing the quantity and steeping time. The result has a mild floral flavor with subtle sweet and grassy notes. If left to steep for too long, it may develop a stronger herbal or slightly bitter taste.

In baking and creative cooking

As edible flowers, they can be used in syrups, creams, biscuits, cakes, white chocolate and garnishes. Chamomile pairs especially well with honey, apple, lemon, vanilla and mild dairy products. For decoration, add the flowers just before serving so they retain their shape and texture better.

Pairings with other herbs

In herbal blends, it can be combined with mint, lemon verbena, linden or other suitable aromatic plants. For a different floral character, you can also try Roman Chamomile – Chamaemelum nobile, which is a different botanical species with its own aromatic profile. This distinction is useful when consistency matters in professional recipes.

A little Spices Bazaar secret

If you use chamomile in a cream or syrup, infuse the liquid first and then strain it. This lets you capture the aroma without too many small plant particles and gives you better control over the dessert’s final texture.

Storage and precautions

Store tightly sealed in a cool, dry, dark place, away from moisture and strong odors. People with a known allergy to plants in the Asteraceae family should take care. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when using it regularly alongside medication, it is best to consult an appropriate healthcare professional.
