Portuguese Fleur de Sel
Portuguese Fleur de Sel
Portuguese Fleur de Sel is a fine type of sea salt, known internationally as fleur de sel. It stands out for its delicate, fragile crystals and is used mainly as a finishing salt, when you want to add a salty punch and distinctive texture just before the dish reaches the table.
What Is Fleur de Sel?
Fleur de sel forms as a thin layer of crystals on the surface of salt pans under suitable evaporation conditions. It is carefully harvested to preserve its characteristic delicate crystalline structure. This makes it noticeably different from regular fine salt, both in appearance and in how it is used.
Texture and Flavor Profile
The crystals have a lighter, more irregular texture than ordinary table salt. When added just before serving, they can remain distinct on the surface of the food for a little while, offering small bursts of saltiness and a pleasant crystalline feel. For this reason, it is usually added by hand in small amounts.
How to Use It
Add a small pinch at the end, over grilled meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes, eggs, or salads. It can also be used on tomatoes with olive oil, on fresh bread, or in dishes where you want the salt to contribute to the final texture.
Since its distinctive character depends largely on the structure of its crystals, it is not essential to use it in recipes where the salt will dissolve completely over a long period. For such uses, regular cooking salt is often more practical.
Fleur de Sel and Everyday Salt
The main difference lies in the form and use. Fine everyday salt dissolves easily and is practical for cooking, while fleur de sel is used more as a finishing salt. You don't need much: a few crystals at the end are usually enough to provide the desired salty punch.
The Portuguese Option
Portugal has a strong tradition of salt production, and different regions and varieties offer distinctive options. In our collection, you can also discover Portuguese Salt from Rio Maior, a different Portuguese option with its own origin and character.
Try Different Fleurs de Sel and Crystals
To compare it with fleur de sel from a different origin, see South African Fleur de Sel. If you'd like a completely different crystal shape, you can also discover African Pearl Salt. The different textures let you choose a salt to suit the dish and the way it is served.
Form
Sea salt fleur de sel in fine, irregular crystals. The crystals' natural appearance, size, and texture may vary. It is recommended mainly for use at the final stage of preparation or directly at the table.
Storage Requirements
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and steam. Close the package tightly after each use and use a dry spoon or clean, dry hands. Moisture can alter the fragile texture and cause the crystals to clump together.
Helpful Note
Salt is a source of sodium, and the amount consumed should be adjusted to your individual dietary needs. If you follow a sodium-restricted diet or have received relevant medical advice, follow the recommendations of your doctor or healthcare professional.
