Sweet Flag – Rhizome (Acorus calamus) is a dried aromatic botanical raw material from a perennial aquatic plant that grows near lakes, rivers, and in wet soils. The rhizome has a warm, bitter, aromatic, slightly camphoraceous profile and a long history across different traditions. Despite its historical use, sweet flag requires particularly careful presentation because β-asarone occurs naturally in some varieties.

Acorus calamus – an aromatic rhizome with a complex identity

Acorus calamus is known internationally as sweet flag. The commercial material is usually the dried rhizome, not the plant’s fine true roots. Botanical origin, geographic variety, and chemotype matter, as different forms of the plant may vary significantly in composition.

What is β-asarone?

β-Asarone is a naturally occurring aromatic compound that may be present in some varieties or chemotypes of sweet flag. For this reason, there are significant restrictions and differing regulatory approaches regarding its use in food and supplements. We do not consider a bulk dried root automatically suitable for internal use without batch documentation.

Traditional references and modern responsibility

Sweet flag has historically been used as an aromatic raw material and appears in traditional herbal systems. However, its historical presence is not proof of safety for any modern use. We do not provide at-home dosage instructions, recommend a daily infusion, or present the product as a treatment for digestive, neurological, or other conditions.

Aromatic and non-food applications

The rhizome’s distinctive aroma has made it known in older aromatic blends and traditional uses. When intended for a non-food application, the raw material should be used in accordance with the relevant labeling. We do not transfer instructions for essential oil to dried rhizome, or vice versa.

A little Spices Bazaar secret

With sweet flag, batch information matters more than appearance. Two pieces of rhizome may look alike but differ in variety and chemical composition. Always keep the original label with the product.

Storage and precautions

Store in a dry, dark place in a tightly sealed container. Unsupervised internal use or improvised dosing is not recommended because of the β-asarone concern. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and seek professional advice before any regular use.
