Comfrey – Dried Root (Symphytum officinale) is cut dried root with an earthy, heavy character that becomes mucilaginous when moistened. At Spices Bazaar, it is presented based on its actual form, botanical identity and appropriate handling. Traditional references to a plant provide historical context and are not, by themselves, proof of therapeutic efficacy.

Comfrey – Dried Root – identity and form

The name Symphytum officinale helps avoid confusion with related plants or similar common names. The product is cut dried root. We do not assume a specific country of origin, variety or concentration of natural constituents unless these are documented for the batch. Natural drying changes the texture and often the color of the plant material.

Character and practical use

Its profile is earthy and heavy, becoming mucilaginous when moistened. Comfrey has a long traditional history, but the root may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids. For this reason, it is not recommended as a daily beverage, and we do not provide instructions for internal dosing. Traditional use does not override modern safety restrictions. The form matters: powder, whole leaf, root and bunch do not behave in the same way. Where the product has an approved food use, proportions are adjusted to the specific form and batch intensity.

Why we do not equate different forms

A dried plant is not automatically equivalent to an essential oil, tincture, capsule or standardized extract. The concentration of natural constituents can vary considerably, and the precautions change accordingly. For this reason, we do not transfer dosages or instructions from one form to another. The label and the actual identity of the batch always take precedence.

Quality and proper handling

Small differences in color, size, cut and aroma intensity are normal. Harvesting, drying and storage affect the final appearance. Use a clean, dry utensil, seal the package immediately, and do not return wet material to it. If transferring the product to a jar, keep the original label so the batch identity is not lost.

A little Spices Bazaar secret

When opening a new batch, compare its aroma and appearance with the previous one without expecting industrial uniformity. Note the date it was opened, do not mix old leftovers with new product, and keep the name on the container. This simple practice greatly improves the organization of a large herb collection.

Storage and precautions

Store tightly sealed in a cool, dry, dark place, away from moisture, steam and strong odors. Internal use of the root is not recommended due to the risk posed by pyrrolizidine alkaloids and possible hepatotoxicity. Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding and in cases of liver disease.
