Trinidad Scorpion Pepper Powder is an extremely hot seasoning for those seeking very high heat and the distinctive aroma of hot peppers. It comes from dried Trinidad Scorpion peppers that are ground together with some of their seeds, creating a relatively coarse powder with natural orange-red and brick-red hues. Due to its very high heat, it is used in tiny amounts and requires particular care both when measuring and handling it.

The pepper we use

Trinidad Scorpion belongs to the species Capsicum chinense and is known internationally for its very high heat. The dried pepper is ground so it can be easily incorporated into sauces, marinades, and spice blends. In this form, small pieces of pepper and ground seeds may be visible, so the texture is not necessarily as uniform as that of a very fine commercial powder.

Origin and identity

Trinidad Scorpion is closely associated with Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean tradition of very hot peppers. It became known worldwide as one of the so-called superhot chilies. The actual heat of a natural pepper can vary depending on the variety, growing conditions, and raw material, so we do not provide a specific Scoville value as a guaranteed figure for every quantity of product.

Aroma, color, and flavor

In addition to its intense heat, Trinidad Scorpion has a distinctive hot pepper aroma, with fruity and warm notes. The powder is naturally orange-red to brick-red in color, while the ground seeds can add lighter hues to the overall blend. The heat is very intense and may linger for quite some time, so this is not used like ordinary paprika or a mild chili pepper.

How to use it

It is used in hot sauces, marinades, chili, curry, meat, chicken, and spicy spice blends. It can also be added to tomato sauce or BBQ preparations when very high heat is desired. Start with an extremely small amount, mix well, and taste carefully before adding more. For a different form of the same chili, see our Crushed Trinidad Scorpion Pepper.

Pairings

It pairs well with garlic, onion, cumin, coriander, paprika, ginger, and black pepper. In marinades, it can be used with olive oil, vinegar, or citrus, while in sauces it goes well with tomato and smoked spices. Because it is so potent, it usually serves to add heat within a larger quantity of other ingredients rather than as a main ingredient.

Natural appearance

It is ground to a relatively coarse texture, with small particles of pepper and ground seeds. Its shade, fineness, and the proportion of individual particles may vary naturally. This is to be expected from a product made from dried and ground plant material.

Practical use in the kitchen

For better control, use a clean, dry teaspoon and do not sprinkle the powder directly over a steaming pot. For large batches, it is best to first mix a very small amount with the other spices or with some of the sauce, then incorporate it into the dish. This helps distribute it more evenly and reduces the risk of too much collecting in one spot.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, dark place, away from moisture, steam, and direct sunlight. Seal the package tightly after each use and keep it out of reach of children. Always use a dry utensil to preserve the product’s texture and distinctive aroma.

Best uses

It is a choice for very spicy recipes and experienced lovers of hot flavors. It is especially well suited to hot sauces, chili con carne, spicy marinades, hot dips, and BBQ rubs. Only a small amount is needed to have a strong impact on the final result.

Precautions

Extremely hot product. Avoid inhaling the powder and contact with the eyes, face, and sensitive skin. Use a very small amount and wash your hands and utensils thoroughly after handling. Gloves are recommended when handling larger quantities. Keep the product away from children and anyone who is unaware of its intensity. If you are sensitive to very spicy foods, avoid using it.
