Celtic Granule Salt from France — known in French as Gros Sel de Guérande — is one of Europe's most recognizable sea salts. It has a grayish-beige color due to the natural presence of clay and trace elements from the salt marshes' seabed, coarse grains with a noticeable moist texture, and an ocean aroma. It is not just salt — it is the result of a millennia-old tradition of artisanal harvesting that preserves every natural element of seawater intact.

The salt we use

We use coarse Gros Sel grains from the Guérande salt marshes, harvested with a traditional wooden tool (ladoir) by the paludiers — the skilled salt farmers of the region. The salt is raw, without additives or chemical processing, and retains its natural moisture. The grains are quite large — ideal for a salt mill, boiling water, and marinades.

Historical identity

The Guérande salt marshes in Brittany, France, have been operating since the 9th century AD — over 1,000 years of uninterrupted production. The term "Celtic" refers to the Celtic origin of the first inhabitants of Brittany who developed these techniques. Today, the salt marshes are a UNESCO biosphere natural reserve, and their salt is produced with the same handcrafted methods as centuries ago. Its gray color is not a flaw — it is the natural hue from the clay of the salt marsh seabed, rich in trace elements.

Aroma, color, and taste

Grayish-beige color with a noticeable moist texture. Its aroma is distinctly marine — seaweed, iodine, ocean. The taste is rich and complex: rounded saltiness without harsh edges, with a slight sweetness and metallic depth that common table salt lacks. It dissolves slowly, leaving an intense, controlled saltiness.

How to use it

Primarily as a cooking salt — added to water for boiling pasta, vegetables, and legumes. It is also excellent for salt crusting fish and meats in the oven, as well as for marinades and brines. It is used in a salt mill to be freshly ground over the dish. See also Fleur de Sel de Guérande — the finest salt from the same salt marshes, for finishing use.

Pairings

With pasta and rice in boiling water for a rich foundational flavor. With whole fish in an oven salt crust — it enhances their natural flavor. With steamed or boiled vegetables, simply with olive oil. With meats in brine before cooking for a juicy result. With butter for homemade salted butter à la beurre de Bretagne.

Natural appearance

Coarse grains of grayish-beige color with noticeable moisture — characteristic of raw Gros Sel. The grains are not uniform, which is a sign of natural, handmade production.

Storage

Store in a cool, dark place, in an airtight container. Due to its natural moisture, it may clump — this is normal and does not affect the taste.

Precautions

Contains no known allergens. Like all salts, excessive sodium consumption increases blood pressure. Use in moderation.
