sitronela-apoxirameni
Dried Citronella – Cymbopogon spp.

Dried Citronella (Cymbopogon spp.) is a dried botanical raw material with an intense lemony, fresh and slightly grassy aroma. The product consists of dried leaves and is intended for those looking for clearly identifiable herbs and specialty raw materials. As this is a natural product, its color, piece size, aroma intensity and proportion of smaller pieces may vary from batch to batch; this alone does not indicate a problem.

Botanical identity and character

The botanical reference Cymbopogon spp. helps distinguish the product from plants with similar common names. Correct identification is particularly important for dried herbs, because different species may look similar after drying. The label name, the plant part used and the batch details are more reliable than identification based on photographs alone.

Aroma, form and practical use

Dried citronella may be used as an aromatic botanical raw material when the batch is food-grade. It should not be confused with concentrated citronella essential oil, which has different uses and safety considerations. We do not apply one standard dosage to all herbs, nor do we transfer directions for standardized extracts, capsules or essential oils to loose dried raw materials. For blends made regularly, it is preferable to weigh the ingredients so that the proportions remain consistent.

Natural variations

Drying reduces moisture and makes many plant parts more brittle. For this reason, a small amount of crumbled material at the bottom of the package is normal. The color may also become darker or duller than that of the fresh plant. Always use a clean, dry utensil and reseal the package immediately after use.

Related products

For a different but related botanical raw material, you can see Dried Lemon Verbena. The two products are not interchangeable: each plant has its own botanical identity, plant part used, aromatic profile and specific precautions.

A little Spices Bazaar secret

Keep the original label with the herb until it is used up. If you transfer it to a jar, note at least the full name and batch number. This simple practice prevents mix-ups when the same cupboard contains many roots, leaves or chopped herbs that look alike.

Storage and precautions

Store in a cool, dry and dark place, tightly sealed and away from moisture, steam and strong odors. Do not consume essential oil based on directions for the dried plant.
